De avocado (Persea americana) is een boom uit Centraal-Amerika; bekend om zijn gelijknamige, voor consumptie geschikte, vrucht (die ook wel advocaatpeer of foutief advocaat genoemd wordt). De naam avocado komt oorspronkelijk van het Nahuatl woord ahuacatl, dat overigens ook "teelbal" betekent [1].
Mexico is een belangrijke exporteur van avocado's. Talrijke boomgaarden worden aangetroffen in de streek rond de stad Uruapan.
Avocado's worden voornamelijk rauw gegeten. Na het schillen kleurt het vruchtvlees snel bruin door blootstelling aan de lucht (enzymatische bruinkleuring), maar dit kan worden tegengegaan door het toevoegen van citroensap.
De avocado is zeer dodelijk voor papegaaien! De vrucht bevat de stof Persine, deze is voor de vogels zeer giftig!
