Een rechtopstaande struik met grasgroene loten, afkomstig uit Zuid-Europa, Klein-Azië. Niet in kleine tuinen planten, daarvoor wordt hij met zijn 3 meter te groot. De gele vlinderbloemen staan met 6-8 in kleine trossen bijeen. Na de hoofdbloei in mei-juni, bloeit hij door tot aan de herfst. Reeds tijdens de bloei ontwikkelen zich de sterk opgeblazen, 6 tot 8 cm grote peulen. Vanaf juli gaan die bruinachtig verkleuren. De zwarte, bitter smakende zaden zijn giftig. Gemakkelijke groeier die het in elke bodem doet maar wel van veel warmte en zon houdt. Soms wordt deze heester aangeplant als ´wijker´.
